A lot of airliners these days are using pulsing lights when on approach. The left and right landing lights turn on and off alternatively. I think it originally was to allow the tower to ask a single airplane to pulse to pick it out of a crowd but lately I've seen planes with the pulsing landing lights on all the way to the ground.

As far as "UFOs", why would they use lights at all?
