Andre's suggestion of putting AAMs on a maritime airframe has actually been done before. During the Falklands campaign, the Brits put 4 x AIM-9s on their Nimrod jets when they flew over the south atlantic looking for Argentinian ships.

It is now history that the Argentinian carrier never even left port during that campaign, however, at the time, there was always the chance that a Nimrod might stumble across it and its A-4s and be chased off by them, so the AIM-9s were carried as last ditch self-defence!

Australian P-3Cs have been fitted for AIM-9s, and I understand the wiring and the pylon mount is not much different to that of the Harpoon, which we do carry in anger!
