Unfortunately the (otherwise good) show refers to a 1997 article in Popular Mechanics, written by Jim Wilson. Mr. Wilson failed to meet his "contact" in Rachel, got lost in the desert and ended up at the gate to Bombing Range 61, some 20 miles from the "real" Area 51 gate. How he could have mistaken this gate for the Area 51 gate is unclear, but he came up with the nonsense story that Rachel had been abandonned, Area 51 closed, and all projects moved to a base in Utah.

In a newer show Mr. Wilson partially retracted that nonsense, but still defends the validity of his "research".

Fact is, Area 51 is not going anywhere. It is expanding, and all indications are that one or more new projects have in fact recently moved INTO the southern area of the base.
