I agree with Peter that there is some question to the integrity of Mr. Freeman. However, he describes some facilities inside the ranges in great detail. Some of which was not widely known at the time when his story got published. OTOH, there are other elements in his story that don't add up. I have to say, I am undecided whether or not I buy the story.

Is an adventure as described in his story possible? I would say yes, although I believe you would need to be in excellent physical condition. And IMHO the risk of getting caught far outweighs what you may or may not be able to see if you manage to get close.
