Most of the border is only marked by orange posts, spaced about 50 yards apart. On most of the dirt roads signs indicate the presence of a restricted area. See the attached link for a photo of some of the posts near Groom Lake Road.

Some posts have silver spheres, about 2 feet in diameter, on top. This is mostly to mark the border for the Area 51 security chopper, since the orange posts are hard to see from the air.

The line of posts runs north, then northwest, then west from the Range 61 fence all the way along the east side of the Groom Mountain Range and then joins back with the fence at the north side of the Groom Mountains, south-west of Rachel.

Between those points the fence runs inside the current border. It marks the old border, before the land grab in the 1980's. At one point the fence comes to within less than a mile of Groom Lake.
