The curved lines are part of the emergency overrun markings. The one that curves off the old Runway 14-32 lakebed overrun was first marked on the lakebed in 1960 in preparation for the A-12 program. If a pilot used up the straight overrun, he could steer around the curve onto the lakebed.

Officially, it was called the "Abort Circle" even though it actually described an Archimedes curve. Locally, it was known as "The Hook." I know one Red Hats pilot who used it a few times.

When the new Runway 14-32 was built, lakebed markings included an abort line (instead of a paved overrun) and curve.
