Flying into Vegas isn't all that crazy. There are generally good deals on airfare to Vegas. The car trip is 3 hour to EDW entering at the north gate. It is unlikely you would hit any traffic. [Sunday afternoon in that direction is totally jammed.]

Airfare to the bay area is really high. San Jose to EDW is 5 hours by car.

There are flights into Palmdale on Scenic Air. North Las Vegas is one point of origin.

One odd thing about parking at EDW is the parking areas are segregated based on the gate you entered. That is, if you enter via Rosamond, they want you to leave via Rosamond. You can get around this, but it's messy. BTW, you park on the dry lake and get bussed or take an open-air shuttle to the base. The bus driver tries to get you to leave your gear in the baggage compartment, but I suggest you don't do it. I was there when one guy "lost" a camera bag.
