Once. After the government took a lot of peoples' land in south central Missouri for a dam (first to keep water from the Mississippi down-stream and later changed to keep the stream water from flowing to the Mississippi) they offered it back ten years later. Of course the people had to pay for it at higher prices than the government paid them for it earlier. Their houses had been ruined during that time by both vandalism and lack of care. Jimmy Carter came to look at the site of the proposed dam while he was president, realized that it was pure pork barrel and had it cancelled.
