I think for large force launches, they head toward the north to avoid making noise over the nearby homes. For sure the B-1s depart toward the north.

I managed to get decent shots from near the fence, just using a long lens (400mm +1.4 teleconverter), ISO 200 exposure, and panning the plane as it lands. I've done this with both a monopod and a camcorder "fluid" head. The fluid head is better for shooting at Nellis since it is more stable than a monopod and the planes are moving so slowly.

If you show up on the Saturday after the flag is over, the planes will probably go back to departing over the golf course. They will be close if you park at the spot near the junk yark, but the angle will be steep.
