What really seems against hiking in is the pure logistics.Even around April when the weather is not that hot you would need to carry a very large supply of water alone,just one other problem radiation.
Marching around without very detailed mapping would be most foolhardy.I seem to remember mention that vehicles that transit the areas out there are washed down pronto.It's a very long round trip on foot & never run into security.Take some doing or a lot of luck.
