I couldn't find Tom Mahood's trail. If you do manage to find it, take a few waypoints.

I think Bonanza Peak would do the job as well, and there is a real trail there. Unlike Mt. Sterling, you will find other hikers at Bonanza Peak, which could come in handy should you get into trouble. I hit snow in May when I tried to hike Bonanza Peak, so you may want to wait until mid-June.

I logged the Bonanza Peak trail head starting at
N36 22.929 W115 44.449 I only climbed about 1000ft before I hit the snow (about 8500ft level). The peak is located at
N36 21.565 W115 44.834
Mount Stirling is at
N36 27.230 W115 58.100
The distance to Papoose is 41 miles from Mt. Sterling and 46 miles from Bonanza Peak, though Bonanza Peak is much higher (10k+ versus 8200ft for Mt. Sterling).

I have Lazar's famed spot as
N37.02778 W115.77639, which someone should verify. GPS technology was just coming on board at the consumer level when Tom Mahood did his adventures, which is unfortunate since he didn't give out waypoints.
