The typical airshow pyrotechnics are diesel fuel and black powder each in an amount to give desired effect. Some venues have limits as to how many and how large the explosions can be. This appears to be a medium size pyro. They are common at warbird gatherings where some aircraft fly coordinated demonstration flights. I have dozens of these photos from EAA Oshkosh and Lakeland airshows. Joregs photo is an excellent shot of the A/C and the pyro, which is dificult to capture in the same frame.
