The most annoying scanner damaage is getting the LCD scratched. Same for GPSs. You can put clear packing tape over the LCD to protect it. A bit better are those PDA protectors. You will have to do some trimming with an Xacto or similarly sharp knife.

The MVT7100 puts outs out a bit of noise that in turn gets fed back to the antenna. I modified mine using RF shielding paint. [I would say commonly available, but I guess it depends where you live. Fry's Electronics stocks it.] Quite a bit of RF leaks through the speaker cone, which I will get around to shield with copper mesh. Anyway, if you run the MVT7100 from a magmount, the performance can be improved because you can keep the noise from feeding back into the antenna with a bit of distance between the two. Now put that magmount on a piazza pan, and you have a ground plane, which makes your antenna work better.
