Even if you could reach the staging area, do you think you could do the hike? For sure, I would modify the route to bypass that part where you walk along the side of a hill. This is the part of the trail just after the loose shale. I've bypassed this once by simply climbing to the top of the first false summit and walking the ridge line to the campsite.
