An interesting thing about Pine Gap is that the site was picked for two reasons. One, it was in a position where it could receive signals from the NSA birds that snoop on the Soviets. Second, the location was remote enough that the Soviets couldn't set up a trawler on the coast to listen to the NSA birds that were listening to them. This dates back to the time when the signals coming from the NSA satellite weren't very secure. They depended on the "footprint" of the receiving site to be very small.
