Checking my spook bible (albeit 20 years old), there is an airplane restriction from Pine Bap of 2.5 miles. I don't know how that effects the story.

Regarding water in the desert, it turns out that the road to Pine Gap allowed ranchers to reach some water sources. The locals were glad the road was built, but wondered why it went past the well for so many miles.

The CIA has a facility in Australia at the "woomera prohibited area." With a name like that, of course I'd want to check it out.

Lastly, regarding the multiple posts, you might want to dump Explorer for Firefox. IIRC, you use a mac, so I can't vouch for how well Firefox works on that platform. My understanding is Apple has set up Java as part of the OS, and the end user can't upgrade it.
