With a 500mm lens, you would get 2.3 C130s in a frame (ok, call it two c130s). Looking at the photo, this is reasonable. In fact, not much cropping would have to be done.

Two things are in your favor here. First, the high sun angle (maybe with an hour of noon) puts some light on the plane. Second, the buidlngs as a backdrop are much better than having sky in the background, since the sky is often brighter than the plane. [Some people spot meter on the plane to get around the sky setting the exposure, but this can turn the blue sky nearly white if you shoot chrome.]

When you photograph at Nellis, it helps to wait until the plane (target) has Sunrise mountain as a background rather than the sky.
