You did pretty good getting to Badger Spring at this time of year. You need to do your "tikaboo horoscope" before doing the climb. You want to pick an evening where there will be an extended period of darkness (no moon) if you expect to see a test. You can either get sun and moon data from the internet or your GPS. I would assume no test is done earlier than two hours after sunset and no later than two hours before sunrise. The testing can go right up to moon rise.
