The fuel has weight. There is no free lunch in this world.

You still haven't mentioned how to fly a plane you can't see, nor how to control a plane well beyond the range of your handy Futaba.

A ground based platform would be easier to build, but then again you have those pesky ground sensors.

You would be better off just paying for some satellite photographs than building your own UAV. Other than buying some satellite photos, then next best thing is to get a telescope and climb Tikaboo. Maybe you can't read a tail number, but producing a photograph good enough to ID an airplane at a distance of 26 miles is quite doable. I was able to photograph a F117a that was taxiing back to its hangar.
