Just checking the map, Santa Clarita is 30 air miles from Palmdale, so that does explain why the dry lake looked more like Mojave than what you see in Nevada.

Some of the Star Trek original series shows have scenes that look like the Mojave as well. The episode where Kirk fought the Gorn as the Metrons watched comes to mind.
