The cheap AA cells are carbon-zinc, not alkaline. They usually put some mysterious marketing verbage like "heavy duty" or something else hard to prove, but I don't think they state carbon-zinc on the package. I've never measured the capacity of a carbon-zinc cell, but the alkaline AA cells are about 2.8 amp hours at 0.5V end of life. NiMH cells are nearly as good, but charging batteries is a pain on the road.

You can generally get alkaline AA cells for about 25 cents each. Fry's just had Sanyo alkaline AA cells for $0.69 for a 4 pack, no limit. Lets just say I'm stocked for a while. ;-) BTW, those Costco AA alkalines are fine. The only bad alkaline AA cells I bought were those Ultralife's from China. They worked in my scanners, but the dimensions were off enough that I could run my flashlight. Vegas has those "99 cent only" stores that have Samsung AA cells at 4 for $0.99.
