Not sure about the chemistry, but I noticed more than once that the cheap AA batteries that you can get for less than $5 a dozen last less than half the time of the more expensive ones in my scanner. You still come out ahead with the cheaper ones, but you have to pack a spare set, which adds extra weight and one more thing to think of.
I usually load a fresh set before I go, which lasts for the entire time I am up there.
