They really don't do anything at the Berkeley labs anymore, to the best of my knowledge. As a Berkeley school kid, Scandia came and taughta bunch of us middle-schoolers to make plastic and showed us some interesting stuff, but they really aren't getting much done at the Berkeley facilities. The tight relationships between LBL (Lawrence Berkeley), LLNL, Scandia and Los Alamos were all forged back in cold war days when serious physics research was being done to develop and improve nuclear technologies. Berkeley became a political center and the area grew too much for it to be secure enough to do major research. Scandia is still a government lab because it follows the research interests of the government- whether profitable to others or not. The need for secrecy is a national matter, as well- they're still working on bombs, and who knows what else in the defense contracting world. Wow- something slightly OT, but I actually have some knowledge about it, unlike the rest of the stuff that goes on here!
