The Bird of Prey patch first appeared around 1997. A source claimed that it was a "current program at Groom Lake." In 2001, an observation by another source linked the Bird of Prey with the Boeing X-45A Unmanned Comabt Air Vehicle (UCAV) demonstrator and also with a classifed flight test squadron at Groom Lake. The UCAV connection led to speculation that the Bird of Prey was an unmanned vehicle. Although that proved erroneous, the family resemblance between BoP and X-45A is obvious.
