The USAAF set up a mock Japanese Battleship (full size) on Muroc Field (Edwards AFB) aswell to practice targeting techniques.

The USMC facility near Barstow is a logistics center.
Look across the road (I 15) in the scrapyard and you will also see lots of remains, and whole out of date, mothballed Armoured vehicles , mostly M-113 APC's.

When i was there in November, we went to see the Pisgah fault (it was a week after the 7.2 that hit LA)
We figured, seeing as this was where the epicenter was, we would see something interest. The roads were cracked big time, but thats it.
On the same road, a huge convoy of 29Palms based vehicles came past on their way to the Logistics base. I think it was called YERMO USMC Logistics Base?

Just go further north, and you at Ft Irwin NTC...
