Yes, there are new projects in the works at Area 51 right now. In fact there is pretty good evidence that the southern part of the base is being prepared for a new project to move in. Due to various observations we believe that it is a UAV, or more likely UCAV. There are also reports that they are working on a larger, triangular shaped successor of the cancelled (?) Darkstar.

Ongoing projects include tests of various platforms and modifications against the radar sites and ECR ranges to the north and west of Groom.

There appears to be a close cooperation between Groom and TTR at the moment. This could indicate a project being handed off from Groom to TTR, as in the early 70's the Stealth Fighter. Or a joint development.

There are various types of sensors. We have found IR and motion sensors, but the most common type on public land are the magnetic road sensors. They detect moving vehicles by the disturbance in the magnetic field of the sensor, which is buried within a couple of feet next to a road. The size of the vehicle and the speed determine the range of the sensor. On the wide Groom Lake Road we managed to avoid tripping the sensors by driving slowly in the center of the road...

When a sensor is tripped it sends a short data burst to the base, or to a nearby repeater. The frequency and the coded 3-digit number identify the sensor.

To detect the direction of travel, two sensors are usually placed within a mile from each other.
