Runway 18 on the north end of the lakebed, near the compass rose, was used for X-15 and lifting body research vehicles. The longest runway on the lakebed is Runway 17. It was used for Space Shuttle landings. The lakebed runways are periodically repainted. The markings take a beating when it rains because the clay gets kicked up. As it dries, the wind smooths the surface, filling in cracks and irregularities.
