A monument to Maj. Michael J. Adams Jr., the first American astronaut to die during a space mission, will be dedicated at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, 8 May 2004, on public land near the crash site. Eagle Scout Candidate John Bodylski and aerospace historian Greg Frazier spearheaded the project. Adams lost his life during a research flight in the X-15 rocket plane on 15 November 1967. The vehicle broke apart during reentry and crashed four miles northeast of Johannesburg, California, just west of Trona Road. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was very supportive of the memorial project and even donated and transported the required concrete and water.
