Besides totally trashing a tire on the way to Mormon Peak, I also picked up some strange bit of metal in the Meadow Valley that caused the tire to have a slow leak. Of course, driving next to a railroad bed is pretty hard on your tires, but quite entertaining for the passengers in the oncoming Amtrak train a few feet from your SUV. To this day I don't know if the correct route requires driving on the railroad bed or not, but I'm not going back to find out.

I still want to see that F4 crash on Mormon Peak, but will use your eastern route.
