Sounds like you hiked across the desert, south from GL Rd. to RB Canyon along the east side of Freedom Ridge. On that route you were very close to the new border that includes Freedom Ridge. Security was probably nervous because they did not know what you were up to, or if you were aware of the border. Also, they could not easily keep an eye on you from the vehicle.

Any chance you can get a tail number from the video footage?

PS: Be careful, I ran into a mountain lion in those foothills once.
