The focal length of a telescope in millimeters divided by the size of the eyepiece in millimeters yield's the effective magnification. Example: 500mm focal length divided by a 25mm eyepiece yields a magnification of 20 times. The aperture (diameter of the large lens) is equally important because the maximum magnification that you expect to use should not exceed 50 times for each inch of aperture. Example: A 4 inch or 102mm aperture allows for magnifications up to 200 times under optimum conditions.
