Interesting; thanks. The pairs of frequencies are both civilian and military. The VHF one is the localizer (horizontal position) and the UHF one is the glideslope (vertical position). The receivers (in planes) are really two receivers in one. The pilot tunes to the VHF frequency and the UHF part of the receiver is automatically tuned to the appropriate frequency. Charts and approach plates never mention the UHF frequency.
