You are absolutely correct about the big runway as a cushion as one plausible option. But!, keep in mind area51 is well known for the a-12/ SR71 and back then the runway was pretty long to accomadate that aircraft including full power emergency stops. If I recall the largest runway was increased to accomodate the famous aurora. I think the addition was done in the 80's about or near the time the alleged aurora was active. The bottom line is simply area51 is in fact a testing ground for very high performance aircraft, hypersonic engines alleged, pulse detenation engines alleged. If these types of engines are a fact and not a theory then in a common sense persepctive you obvisouly need a hell of a lot of runway. Especially with aircraft with these types of engines that are allegedly designed to go mach 5 or faster.
