... this seems not too likely for YF-114C, because this designation was used in the (possibly early) 1980s. The MiG-29 existed then, but the USAF would have been _really_ quick to get one so early.

I know that the following were used (in roughly the same time frame as YF-114C), so maybe we can get Peter to give some hints on them ;-):
- YF-110B
- YF-110C
- YF-112C
- YF-113
- YF-114C
- YF-114D

@Peter: Were "suffix-less" designations (like the above plain YF-113) really used, or was this an omission by my source?

I also have reliable (hopefully ;-)) information that some of these aircraft had fake serials assigned (the real s/ns in this range are officially listed as "cancelled block"):
- YF-110B: 75-001, 75-004, 75-010
- YF-114D: 75-008

@Peter: Can you confirm these serials?

Another one, which Peter has mentioned somewhere else, is YF-117E.
