Groom Lake was a designated emergency landing site for the X-15, but it was never used. Mud Lake was used four times. The 1962 landing accident happened at Mud Lake. It is well documented (photos, film, accident report). All X-15 emergency landing lakebeds were marked with runways. Mud Lake had two 3-mile-long strips with overruns on each end between 3,000 and 5,000 feet long.
