Interesting fact about RAF Macrihanish, the runway is about the same length as RAF Fairford's (classed as 10,000 ft which converts to 3,048 mtrs)

Fairford was significantly improved last year (2002) through the investment of $100m, (NATO investment) a vast amount bearing in mind its status as a non-active base. The investment was to turn the base into premier heavy bomber base in Europe.

Not only did they rebuild and strengthen the runway but they trippled fuel capacity - fuel storage capacity was already high because the base used to be home to in-flight refueling aircraft!

Interestng, a vastly improved facility that is only used as a contingency airfield.
