FAQ: What is the TTR (Tonopah Test Range) ?

What is the TTR (Tonopah Test Range) ?

The Tonopah Test Range (TTR) is another secret test facility about 65 miles northwest of Area 51, near the town of Tonopah. It is operated by the Air Force and Sandia National Labs, and it is not directly connected to Area 51. Security there is not quite as tight, and the facility can be seen in the distance from Hwy 6. The base is used for flight testing of new developments, missile tests and recently development of new warfare strategies. It includes an airport, hangars and a large housing complex near the main gate. There is a lot of radar and test equipment set up in the valley southeast of the base.

The F-117 Stealth Fighter was stationed here in the early 1980's, after its initial development at Groom was completed, but long before it was revealed to the public.

Currently a project involving Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is stationed there. The project seems to be centered around evaluation of new types of UAVs and development of strategies for their use.
